Anniversary of the full-scale invasion: Roma in the fight for Ukraine

Feb. 24, 2026 Officially

February 24 is a date that changed the lives of each and every one of us forever. The anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine is a day of pain and loss, but also a day of dignity and resistance.

Roma people defend Ukraine. Because this is our homeland. We have no other.

Yes, we have our own traditions, customs, language, and culture. We cherish our identity. But at the same time, Roma are an integral part of Ukraine. We have lived here for generations, building communities, raising children, working, and creating. That is why the invasion has been painful for us too. It is pain for the destroyed cities, for the loss of loved ones, for forced displacement, for the fear that has invaded our homes.

From the first days of the full-scale war, Roma have stood up to defend the state — in the ranks of the Armed Forces, territorial defense, and volunteer formations. We fight, we rescue, we volunteer.

In the first months of the invasion, while under fire ourselves, we helped families leave the frontline territories, found transport, and coordinated evacuations. We collected and delivered humanitarian aid—food, medicine, clothing. We supported those who lost their homes, documents, and livelihoods. We did everything possible to ensure that no one was left alone with their misfortune.

This war has shown that the Roma community stands for responsibility, solidarity, and resilience. We are not standing on the sidelines. We are walking this path together with the whole country—a difficult and painful path, but one we are walking together.
Today, we remember all those who gave their lives for Ukraine's freedom. We thank those who continue to fight. And we emphasize once again: Roma are Ukraine. And Ukraine is our home, which we defend together.
